There is a principle that is often missed in our current cultural worldview. This principle is a key to health, happiness, and success in everything we do. It may not sound very exciting at first, but the more you investigate it, the more it can positively impact every dimension of your life. Are you missing balance in your life?
It’s easy to have a myopic view of life—not being able to see the long-term consequences of our actions. We tend to see only the symptoms that are right in front of us rather than how these relate to deeper patterns or wider ranges of possibilities.
We tend to see only what is out of balance, but not realizing that balance is the issue, we react in an unbalanced way to that. We want to stamp this out, eradicate that, or find the one right answer so we can throw out the rest. We tend to gravitate toward simplistic solutions that fail to take into account the dynamic diversity of life.
An example of this is prescription drugs. It’s amazing to me that prescription drug commercials are effective even when the wide-ranging and long-term damaging consequences are listed. Have you listened to the litany of side effects? And we’re willing to put this stuff in our bodies?
I guess the bottom line is that we have symptoms that scare us. We seek immediate relief even if the “cure” puts us further out of balance, or if it leads us to involvement with a series of drugs to combat the side effects of that first drug.
The purpose of this post isn’t to condemn prescription drugs, but to highlight them as an example of a larger issue—failing to understand balance when it comes to our health and well-being. It’s easy to think “this” is THE ANSWER or to be endlessly searching for that one magic pill that will “do it for us.” However, maybe there isn’t one thing. Maybe there are many things that are important in life and what will “do it for us” is finding the right balance.
The key insight of “balance” is that life is multi-dimensional and dynamic. Everything moves in cycles. There is ebb and flow. Diversity is essential. Each element is important. Each has its purpose, its time, and its right amount. Balance is a dynamic concept that takes into account the wide range of human experience and honors the multi-faceted continuums in which we live.
Discovering the right balance in any given moment requires paying attention to your inner state and what is going on around you. It is found by tuning into your inner guidance. As a start to that, simply have the idea of balance in mind as you go about your life this week. When you have decisions to make, ask yourself, “How can I make this decision in a way that increases balance in my life?”
