The Secret Diary of an Aspiring Meditation Master – October 2014, Week Two, “Relax Deeply Using Open Focus”

Welcome back as we continue to follow Kevin Beautywith an actual practice.

In fact, what Dr. Joe seems to be suggesting is that Open Focus is a necessary starting point for all the healing or growth we want to experience in our lives. This is not just conjecture on his part. He first learned it 30 years ago, when he was able to use his mind to heal his spine after a horrendous accident. In his seminars he has been able to train participants to do this same Open Focus relaxation process, and uses brainwave and brain mapping technology to watch what their brains are actually doing while in the meditative state.

The 3 Step Process Toward Healing

Open Focus is the first of Dr. Joe’s three step process toward healing, that we introduced last week. In the second step, he asks us to rest in that open state. From the state of rest, we move to the third step, which is rehearsing our desired outcome, and how that outcome would make us feel.

Kevin’s meditation takes us through step one this week, and then he will continue with steps three and four during the remainder of the month. This is not the first open focus type of meditation Kevin has done. A few years ago he introduced us to the book The Open Focus Brain: Harnessing the Power of Attention to Heal Mind and Body, written by the director of the Princeton Biofeedback Centre, Dr. Les Fehmi, Ph.D., and award-winning science writer, Jim Robbins.

The concept of Open Focus involves feeling the space within and surrounding our bodies. There is something about this method which is very effective at calming the mind, and deeply relaxing our bodies.

For myself, however, this is not easy to do on my own. My mind wants to watch, take notes, and offer a running commentary, complete with lots of skepticism and impatience. It’s even a little uncomfortable. But listening to Kevin walk me through it really helps me reach that open state, as I pay attention to his voice and not my inner mumblings. Luckily, Kevin’s post includes a spot to download the meditation, so we can practice on a daily basis if we’d like to.

If you’ve never tried Open Focus meditation, I encourage you to give it a try. Doing it a few times, at least, will help prepare you for the other steps Dr. Joe says are needed for our minds to heal our bodies.
