I’ve been asked the same question over and over again throughout my life: “Why are you so happy?”
The question isn’t why am I so happy; it’s why not?
Happiness is a choice that is made every day. It isn’t a permanent state of being that a person is somehow gifted with for all of time. When you see people who appear happy, they’re usually fighting the same challenges as you are. The difference is that these people have made the choice that they are going to be happy no matter what.
There are things, people and occurrences that can make us happy on a short-term basis. Like when you see your favorite cousin and just bubble over with glee. When you’ve graduated from college, or written your first book, happiness can overcome you. But only for a short time.
If you want to experience happiness over the long-term, you must make the choice every day.
When we open our eyes in the morning, our brain starts to work immediately, emitting either positive or negative thought frequencies that we end up attracting right back to us. So obviously, if you want happiness to come back to you, you must choose happy thoughts as soon as you wake up. Thoughts you can try are:
“I’m happy today.”
“I’m so thankful to be alive.”
“Another beautiful morning and another beautiful day ahead!”
Talk goodness to yourself out loud if that’s what you have to do to get your happy thoughts going. Negative thoughts will creep in, but it is always your choice to reject those and proceed right on back to what makes you happy.
Throughout the day, consciously choose who you are going to be around, what you are going to do and what you are going to make happen in your life. As you carefully choose only those and that which make you happy, you will increase your happiness through and through.
Do something you love each and every day. As for me, I love to write. Whether it’s a serious article about metaphysics, or an inspirational musing like this one, I love to share my written word with the world. It makes me happy to use my natural gifts to uplift others. I also love to read, and make it a point to do this quiet activity at least once every day.
What do you love to do? Do you like to paint? Do you enjoy taking a hike out in nature? Whatever it is for you, make it a clear point to do something that makes you happy too.
Make the choice each day that you are going to be happy no matter what happens. It’s not easy to do, because sometimes unwanted things pop up in our lives. But no one said being happy was easy. Happiness is a choice, and it requires intentional effort and work. You’ll get the hang of it the more you try.
Today’s Mantra: “It is a good day. No matter what. It is a good day.”
