Moving to a smaller home makes good sense for many people. At the same time, it can be difficult to get used to having less space. What will you do with all of your furniture and other belongings? To help you make downsizing your living space less stressful, here are five tips to keep in mind.
1. Give Things Away
A good way to get rid of many items you no longer need is to simply give them away. First you must decide what you can live without. Then you can ask friends and family members if they could use some of your larger items. Anything remaining can be donated to Salvation Army or Goodwill.
2. Sell at Auction
Auctions are a good way to lighten your load while putting extra money in your pocket. You could sell things piecemeal on sites like eBay. This, however, works best for smaller items. For larger items, you could call up a local auction house and ask them to appraise your belongings. If you have antiques or other valuables, they might send a truck over and pick up your stuff.
3. Rent Storage Space
Renting storage space is a way to hold onto items you don’t want to part with. This gives you time to figure out where to store them long term. Storage space can take the stress out of moving, as there’s no immediate pressure to fit everything into your new home.
4. Maximize Storage at Your New Place
You may have more space at your new home than you realize if you’re creative about it. Add shelving, efficient cabinets and closet organizers to fit more of your belongings. If you have a little property, you could even build or purchase a storage shed.
5. Move in an Organized Manner
Planning your move well in advance and packing in an organized manner will help you readjust to your smaller living space. Label all of your boxes so you’ll know exactly where everything is. Numbering or color coding your boxes is a good way to do this. Moving into a smaller space can be refreshing. Once you adjust to the fact that you have less space, you’ll probably find that it’s a relief. Unloading excessive stuff and learning how to store things creatively can make you feel lighter and freer. Just make sure you plan your move well in advance so you have time to take care of all the details.
