Appreciation Is the Key to Cooperation

gratitudeDo you show sincere appreciation in every situation you can where someone does something nice for you, is helpful to you, or does something that benefits you in some way?

And, do you approach delicate situations with other people at work or in your personal life with appreciation for their strong points?  And are you understanding if they’re unable to live up to your immediate expectations?

What I’ve come to learn is that showing even the smallest amount of appreciation for someone in any situation can be the difference between a positive outcome or a just plain bad experience.

When we show appreciation for whatever it is that someone attempts to do for us, we’re likely to immediately get a positive response.  And likewise, if we are negative towards them, we’re likely to get a negative response that results in an overall bad experience for everyone.

And what’s the automatic response to being treated with appreciation?  A higher level of cooperation, a higher level of engagement, and a much more helpful attitude!

My husband and I experienced this just recently while trying to make a decision on a major appliance we had to replace.  We were in a big box store looking at various models and of course were eventually approached by an employee asking what she could help us with.

We were considering a couple different brands and asked her various questions we thought she’d be able to answer.  When she wasn’t sure about some things, we asked if she could check and told her we’d be happy to wait.

Her demeanor went from uncertain and why do I always get these people to friendly and helpful.  She went and inquired about the things we had asked about and soon returned with a smile and answers to our questions.

We thanked her for her help, ordered the appliance, and told her she had done a good job for us and that we appreciated it.  She in turn responded with gratitude for our patience and for visiting their store.

In fact, when I got home, I called the store to talk to the manager and let her know that we had visited the store and had a good customer service experience due to the willingness to go the extra mile by the person who waited on us.  She appreciated the call and assured me it would not go unnoticed.

This simple call to show appreciation for this employee will likely result in the employee being complimented by her manager for her good customer service and perhaps garner a written commendation for her employee file.

And, it will likely cause the employee to be proud of herself for providing good customer service and more importantly will likely carry over to future customer experiences.

Imagine what the world would be like if we all made a conscious effort to show appreciation for others for even the smallest of acts or behaviors or perhaps for no reason other than as a kind gesture.

The point of telling you this story and choosing this topic for my article is simple, and I believe it is summed up perfectly in the following quote:
