How to begin down the road to better health; how to start can be overwhelming!
The road to better health can be a confusing one. There are so many factions out there trying to convince you their method, diet or, too often, drug is best.
The fact is that for most people, and for many reasons, finding a natural way to alleviate the curse of depression will serve you and your body better in the long term. You will ultimately have more control over how you feel, and you will not be subject to the side effects, short or long term of drugs.
It’s important to acknowledge that treating depression with drugs does not “cure” it. It only treats and suppresses the symptoms, if you’re lucky. While you may feel less “blue”, you can expect to deal with side effects like weight gain (a common side effect), vivid dreams, foggy brain, and a host of others.
The journey from being depressed to feeling “normal”, and most days happy without the use of antidepressants can begin with a task as simple as cleaning out your pantry and your refrigerator.
Start by getting rid of anything with preservatives in it; toss out any fast, easy prep food in a box. Stop eating anything that is factory farmed, including fish. Begin eating as much organic food as possible. Think vivid colored food, not beige and reach for dark green leafy greens instead of iceberg for your salads!
Commit to eating better; eating clean. You’ll need to go through your pantry and refrigerator and toss lots of “food” that is not serving you; food that is making you sick, depressed, achy, overweight, etc.
Read three books to get you started down the path to a new life. “The Blood Sugar Solution” by Dr. Mark Hyman, “Grain Brain” by Dr. David Perlmutter and “The Virgin Diet” by J J Virgin. Two of these books have been written by doctors, and along with being wonderful reads packed with life changing information, they will guide you as you go through the food purge of out with the bad, and in with the good.
Before you start talking yourself out of this by thinking you could never give up your Big Mac or your other favorite dishes that may be harming you, remember, you can always go back to your Big Mac. It will always be there for you if you choose it. But hold this thought in your mind for a few minutes. Close your eyes and imagine feeling so wonderful that you don’t want that Big Mac… that it’s suddenly easier than you would ever have believed to say “no” to it. Imagine yourself 20 pounds thinner and then realize you didn’t have to diet to lose the weight.
It’s important to remember that a life change like this is not linear. It will have its challenges. Some people are stronger willed than others, too. If you falter and eat something that does not serve your mind and body well, be aware of how it makes you feel. Then forgive yourself and get back on the path to your new healthy life!
