While I cannot claim to be wealthy, and am still in the process of learning what constitutes a life of abundance, as a massage therapist and naturalist I am blessed with work that is fulfilling and provides me with the means to meet my needs.
There are several aspects to consider when thinking about financial freedom; including these questions: what are the ethics of socio-economics, what are we thinking, and what are we doing?
Throughout history, we find that every culture has deities in charge of money, wealth and abundance. Prayers and offerings are made, temples built to appeal to higher powers for wealth and abundance. In the Judaic-Christian Bible, the Book of Job depicts the story of a man devoted to God, who despite leading an honorable life following the religious practices of his time, nevertheless suffers loss and heartache. Who hasn’t wondered why some seem born to fortune, or lucky, while others are desperately poor?
In an effort to answer these questions, I have often turned to the teachings of a number of teachers who have devoted their time and efforts to helping others to realize their greatest potential. In the following paragraphs, I discuss the work of several inspirational authors and teachers who have been mentors to me and my family.
Patricia Cota-Robles is a New Age inspirational author and spiritual teacher, founder of the non-profit, educational organization, New Age Study of Humanity’s Purpose. Her approach to abundance is from a very spiritual perspective, and yet requires incisive personal assessment and practical steps that need to be taken. In her book and CD, “Abundance”, Cota-Robles suggests a number of affirmations and prayers. What is unique about these affirmations is that they include expressions of love, forgiveness and gratitude. Through the Gift of Prosperity, “the substance of money becomes tangibly available and flows continually into the hands and use of every life-stream, organization or activity that is receiving the ideas from the Divine Mind of God to restore this Planet to Her Diving Heritage which is Heaven on Earth”
In Patricia Cota-Robles’ book “Abundance”, she says that in order to realize financial freedom, it is necessary first to clear our relationship with money. Feelings of fear and confusion come from childhood programming, misunderstandings, and sometimes even the often-held religious belief that poverty and suffering is somehow a path to spiritual growth. Low self-esteem and unworthiness also contribute to negative thinking that confuses our relationship with money and interferes with our dreams of financial freedom.
Cota-Robles counsels the time-honored tradition of tithing, explaining that there is a second, very important factor in attaining financial freedom. According to the laws of the Universe, there must be a balance; we must give something back. Very important in this interaction is that we give with the feeling of gratitude for the gifts that have been given, as she explains, “giving our money away in loving gratitude for our gift of life.”
The idea of giving back and including requests for the same blessings for others in prayers and affirmations for money is often a missing element in many self-help and wealth consciousness books and programs.
Another inspirational author and teacher that has been a mentor for me is Wayne Dyer. He has a number of books and CD’s on self-realization. His latest may be one of his best. He says, “The greatest gift you have been given is the gift of your imagination. Everything that now exists was once imagined. And everything that will ever exist must first be imagined.”
Wishes Fulfilled; Mastering the Art of Manifesting – by Wayne W. Dyer
Make no mistake however; Wayne Dyer’s method is more than just sticking positive sayings on the bathroom mirror (although I say to use any method that works to kill our ANTS or Automatic Negative Thoughts as Dr. Daniel G. Amen calls them). Like all the truly effective practices, there must be physical, applied practice. Wayne Dyer teaches the practice of training the imagination, practicing the art of assuming the feeling of wishes fulfilled, and practicing with steadfast resolution. Sakyong Miphan Rinpoche, author of the book, Turning the Mind Into an Ally”, likens our untrained mind to a wild horse.
James Allen, British philosopher, inspirational writer and author of the well-known book “As a Man Thinketh”, wrote, “Through his thoughts, man holds the key to every situation and contains within himself that transforming, regenerative agency by which he may make of himself what he wills.”
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Think and Grow Rich is the book that started it all. While today there are any number of books and programs on success, the power of the mind, and how to manifest our dreams. This book was a groundbreaker in the self-help, motivation and inspiration movement. Written in 1937 during the Great Depression, Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” is still one of the most influential and widely read motivational books on success. Over 70 years later, it is currently ranked by Business Week Magazine as the sixth best-selling paperback business book. Napoleon Hill explained that the philosophy outlined in his book not only will help a person develop material security, but also will help people to succeed in almost any endeavor.
In his book “Think and Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill outlines the thirteen principles (originally there were sixteen principles), founded on his earlier work “The Laws of Success”. The earlier work was the result of over twenty years of research with the cooperation with over 500high-achieving, wealthy and successful individuals. The thirteen steps discussed in the book, with accompanying case studies and examples, are:
- Specialized Knowledge
- Organized Planning
- Power of the Master Mind
- The Mystery of Transmutation
- The Subconscious Mind
- The Brain
- The Sixth Sense
Here are some other classic books on success and wealth consciousness that come highly recommended:
• Seven Habits of Highly Effective People – by Stephen R. Covey
• Richest Man in Babylon – by George S. Clason
• Rich Dad Poor Dad – by Robert Kiyosaki
