Sleep Apnea And Anxiety Make For Restless Nights

stress-of-insomnia18 million Americans have sleep apnea and that number is steadily climbing. Insomnia from anxiety ruins millions of American’s sleep each night and the odds are at some point in life you will struggle with insomnia. It happens to almost everyone. This article will explain how to deal with anxiety induced insomnia, cope with CPAP therapy, and improve your sleep.

First I need to talk about anxiety. We are an anxious nation. Bad news abroad, national problems, crime, and personal issues bring on anxiety. That’s just life though, don’t expect to go through life without having to deal with anxiety at some point. The problem is that anxiety and insomnia are linked.

The good news is you can beat anxiety if you unplug your digital world around bedtime, practice active relaxation, and live an active life.

I like the term active relaxation because it implies effort and deliberate action. Active relaxation is when you take time and focus on nothing but unwinding. Here’s how it works, you find a peaceful spot, set your timer, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Focus on hearing and experiencing your deep breathing. This active relaxation will sooth your frayed nerves and get you ready for bed.

Set your phone, tablet, and computer to stun as you silence them in the evening to keep out the barrage of messages you get each day.

Exercise 30 minutes each day in order to strengthen your mind, body, and spirit. Exercising will help you become fit and improve your chances of being tired in the evening. Follow your doctor’s advice, but be active each day.

Using your CPAP may make you anxious about sleep. To cope with this anxiety make sure your mask fits properly. This will decrease or eliminate discomfort at night. Keep your hose clear of your bed. CPAP pillows can help and so can CPAP hose stands. Finally, do something to keep your mouth shut while you sleep. They sell special chin straps if you need help with this.

    In review:

    • Get a CPAP mask that fits
    • Keep your mouth closed
    • Be active every day
    • Keep your CPAP hose out of the way
    • Actively relax 30 minutes before bed
    • Unplug your digital distractions

These tips will help you sleep through the night and be rested. They will also help you lose weight and be fit. What do you have to lose except a few pounds and restless nights?
