    Is Technology Stressing You Out?

Today, the coffee remains, but the newspapers have been replaced with email and social media networks. What’s the difference? Well, actually, there’s quite a big one. While sipping coffee and reading the newspaper is a relaxing ritual for many, the same cannot be said for catching up on emails or even scanning the newsfeed of your favorite social media platform. If you’re looking to beat depression and anxiety, then you may want to consider technology as a potential source of stress. Here are a few of the problems with our digital society and what you can do to learn how to treat anxiety resulting from too much tech.

    • Technology Equals a 24/7 Work Day
    If you only check your personal email in the morning, then you may be more likely than most to beat depression caused by our “always on” lifestyles. The truth is, though, too many of us not only check our work emails before we head off for the day, but also before we go to sleep at night. While it may seem like a convenience, it’s actually self-imposed overtime without the extra pay! Just as your body needs a break from the toil of the day, your mind also needs time off from work-related information. Make a commitment to save your work emails for the work day, and you’ll be one step closer to being an expert at how to treat anxiety effectively.

    • Social Media Can Be Depressing

    Social media is a tool. It’s not good or bad in and of itself, but how you use it can make a big difference in whether you come away from it in a good or bad mood. It’s natural for people to try to paint themselves in the most positive light on social media platforms, and that’s not a bad thing. But, if you’re already feeling down in the dumps, looking at pictures of other people and their “perfect” lives can leave you feeling inferior. If you’re trying to beat depression, take a break from social media for a while and see if that makes a difference. You can always
    rejoin the fun when you’re feeling more like yourself.

    • Content Overload is Overwhelming
    I don’t have to tell you how much information is available online, and the number of websites and blogs is growing exponentially. Most of us want to be informed, and the Internet has a lot to offer in terms of education and support. All good stuff, right? Definitely! The problem is that if you feel compelled to keep up with it all, you’re bound to start feeling overwhelmed, even if it’s subconsciously. If you’re attempting to learn how to treat anxiety in the information age, try putting some time aside for low-tech activities. Turn your Smartphone off and read a book, garden, take a bath, whatever relaxes you. Or, call up a friend and meet up for some good old fashioned face-to-face conversation. It’s still the very best kind!

    There are so many good things about technology that it’s difficult to even consider it as a source of your anxiety and depression. Remember, though, everything is better in moderation. Take some time to unplug and then reflect on how you feel. You may be surprised to find that becoming less technologically engaged can help you beat depression and feel less stressed at the same time.
