    A Balanced Life in 3 Simple Steps

By keeping check on a few key areas of your life, you can learn how to deal with stress and how to treat anxiety. Here are 3 easy ways to keep your life in balance.

    Put Down That Comfort Food!
    Unfortunately, many of us turn to our favorite comfort foods when we are feeling stressed. Cake, macaroni and cheese, cookies, and fried foods are just a few of our go-to stress relievers. While there is nothing wrong with these foods in moderation, turning to them solely for the purpose of relieving your anxiety is a sure way to set yourself up for failure. One important factor to consider when you are wondering how to deal with stress is, do you eat a healthy and balanced diet? Too much sugar in your diet inevitably leads to sugar crashes and ultimately a lack of energy. Complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat breads and other whole grains are generally better than simple carbohydrates which give a quick burst of energy but wear off quickly. Of course, veggies and fruit need to make up a large portion of your diet along with proteins such as eggs, beans, and cheeses. Also, avoid drinking too much caffeine and alcohol. By making the decision to consume healthy foods, you have taken the first step in learning how to treat anxiety!

    Get Moving!
    Another important key to figuring out how to deal with stress is to look at your exercise routine. It’s tempting when we are feeling overwhelmed and anxious to shut down and do nothing. Sometimes life seems so scary that we just want to hide away. The next time you feel anxious, resist the urge to lie on the couch and watch hours of television. Instead, get up and get moving! Research clearly shows that when we get in motion, our bodies release endorphins resulting in a more positive outlook on life. Not to mention, exercise can help get your mind off of your problems and onto a better, more fit you! If beginning an exercise regimen seems overwhelming to you, enlist a friend to work out with you. Having someone to come alongside you and work with you is a great motivation to get started. Remember, exercise can be as simple as taking a walk or riding your bicycle; you don’t necessarily have to get a trainer and start pumping iron! Once you commit to getting up and getting in motion, you will be on your way to solving the issue of how to treat anxiety.

    Catch some ZZZ’s
    Oftentimes, when we are overwhelmed we neglect our sleep because we simply feel that we have too many other things to accomplish. In the long run, however, you are not doing yourself any favors. Our bodies need regular sleep in order to repair and recharge. Regular sleep also helps to stabilize our moods and increase our productivity. There is no magic number of hours that each of us is required to sleep. Some people need more and some less. If you are waking up feeling groggy and tired each morning, chances are you are not getting adequate sleep. Being well rested plays a major role in living a balanced, healthy life!

    It’s easy for our lives to become unbalanced. We must regularly assess our lifestyle to ensure we are experiencing our best quality of life. As with anything, it’s important to consult your physician before beginning or changing your routine.
