    Words to Live By

stress free“Finish each day and be done with it.  You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in.  Forget them as soon as you can.  Tomorrow is a new day.  Begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense!” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I came across these words to live by in this Ralph Waldo Emerson quote recently and remembered how compelling and impactful it was for me the first time I ever saw it. It was at a time when I was looking for direction while trying to get my first (retail) business off the ground several years ago.

I was stressing out about how to get on the map and had been spending a lot of time trying various things to make it happen day in and day out but wasn’t getting where I wanted to be. Then one night after another brutal day of spinning my wheels, I was online looking for ideas, inspiration, and anything that could possibly be the be all end all answer to driving my business forward.

That’s when I found this Emerson quote.  I can’t begin to explain how powerful it was to read those words and realize everything was going to be okay. Insights started coming to me that made perfect sense such as slow down, spend some time looking at the bigger picture, and understand you’re doing all you can with what you know right now.

I started each evening thereafter by reading this quote and then relaxing and marinating in it for a while and letting it fill my subconscious as I trailed off to sleep.  It was a life-changer.

From that day forward I worked on learning to stay within myself by remembering Emerson’s wise words and not letting my intellectual and ego mind take over and drag me down the deep, dark rabbit hole of stress.

It also inspired me to take time each day to look at the bigger picture, think through what my best options were, and consider my best options for professional guidance.

Seeing this quote again quickly reminded me that these are words to live by and compelled me to write this article about why these words of wisdom are so critically important and can change anyone’s life if they keep them close at all times.  It’s something I like to share with my coaching clients because for many it has the same, calming and defining affect it had on me.

And, it doesn’t matter what your trying situation is—life, career, relationships, children—it doesn’t matter.  It’s equally as powerful in any set of circumstances.

This is just one of many compelling quotes written by Emerson, but it is arguably one of his most powerful.  And yes, I still use it to boost myself up at the end of any long day that comes along, and it has been beneficial to countless others I’m sure.

Read it, embrace it, and by all means marinate in it.  It may very well be one for your back pocket, too. These are definitely words to live by.  (To read more outstanding quotes that can change your life and rock your world, visit my Daily Success Tips page here.)
