How Stress Can Take It’s Toll On Your Hair And Skin

How Stress Can Take It's Toll On Your Hair And SkinIf you are stressed out, you might not know it but the pressure is impacting your hair and skin in a negative way. While most people think that stress can affect the heart, the brain and the nerves, it actually manifests itself on the outside of your body as well.

    Stress Releases Cortisol

When you are stressed, your body releases a strong steroid called cortisol. This communicates with the body’s sebaceous gland and instructs it to create more oil. Oily skin leads to acne. Not only will the production of cortisol lead to oil production, it also compromises the body’s immune system as well, so you’ll become more prone to sickness. Use oil free cleansers and wash off your makeup when you feel extra stressed.

Be Conscious Of Your Behaviors When Stressed

When you feel pressure, you tend to touch your skin more than usual. While you might not notice that your skin scratching, rubbing and general touching increases when you’re stressed out, it happens to almost everyone. Our hands carry all sorts of dirt, germs, bacteria and oils from the objects that we touch on a daily basis. When we transfer all of this grime to our skin, we increase the chances of break outs, acne, skin damage and general sickness. Try to be more mindful of your body language when you feel stressed, and take steps to keep away from these habits.

Stress Can Cause You To Neglect Skin Care

Anyone who has worked over 40 hours a week or tried to work while raising kids will testify to the fact that they lacked the time to take care of their skin. When we’re pressed for time, we often forget to apply SPF before heading outside or rub lotion on our skin after showering. Sometimes we remember but we are too tired to expend the energy to take proper care of our skin. The result can be dry skin, oily skin, acne and many more skin problems. Make it a habit to wash your face before bed and keep sunscreen handy.

    Stress Aggravates Current Skin Problems

If you suffer from skin infections, fever blisters, psoriasis or other skin problems, stress will make these maladies much worse. Stress doesn’t allow the skin to function as designed. It can cause the skin to dry out by prompting the outer layer’s cells to become smaller and eliminating the lipids between those cells. This unseen chaos heightens already existing skin conditions and results in unhealthy looking skin. If you suffer from rashes or other skin problems, find the cause and treat it accordingly so stress doesn’t worsen it to a damaging level.

    Stress Causes Hair Loss

While most people shed around 100 hairs in a single day, this number tends to increase when stress sets in. Stress causes a change in the body’s typical physiological functionality and the result can be hairs that enter a resting phase. When hairs enter this phase, they are soon shed. Simply put, stress interrupts the regular hair cycle. They’ll make up for the hairs that you are losing due to the stresses in your life and they’ll seamlessly blend in with your current hair.

Emotional Stress Can Compromise Your Locks

If you have recently endured an emotional stress, it can translate into a physiological stress. For example, someone going through a divorce will likely not be able to sleep well or their diet will be altered in an unhealthy way. These changes to one’s biology can create an imbalance in the system and trigger hair loss. Get the recommended number of hours of sleep per day and take extra time out of your day to rest more often.

If you feel stressed out and are concerned in the slightest with your image, do everything that you can to mellow out. Your mind will thank you and your body will improve as well.
