    6 Tips To Tackle The Stress That Comes With ItCaring for a family member is a labor or love, but there is also the need for the caregiver to find ways to deal with the stress that comes from looking after another person. This is especially true as that family member slowly loses the ability to manage basic tasks like dressing or taking care of hygiene needs. If you are caring for a parent or other loved one, here are some things you must do to help keep the stress within acceptable limits.

    Hiring a Housekeeper

    Consider hiring someone who can help with various tasks associated with the household. For example, hire a housekeeper to come in two or three times a week. That individual can take care of doing the laundry, manage the dusting and vacuuming, and in general manage the housework for you. That will leave more time to focus on ensuring your loved one has the attention he or she needs.

    Work Out an Arrangement with a Sitter

    Have someone come in and sit with your relative for an evening. That will leave you free to have dinner with friends, go to a movie, or basically do anything you like to decompress from your daily duties. Having some time off to look forward to will make it all the easier to keep your cool when your loved one is having a particularly rough day.

    Creating Some Quiet Time Each Day

    Structure the day so that both of you have an hour or so for napping, watching television, or just relaxing in general. During that time, there is no need to do anything at all. Both of you will feel more refreshed and able to cope with whatever the rest of the day should bring.

    Encourage Visitors

    Assuming your loved one is up to having company, encourage friends and relatives to stop by once or twice a week. Even if they can only stay for a half-hour or so, that gives your loved one a chance to see and talk with someone different. It also means that you can have a few moments to take care of an essential task while your loved one is occupied.

    Involve Other Family Members

    There are times when you will need to deal with issues such as trips to the supermarket, picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy, and in general keeping the household going. While other family members may not be in a position to devote huge blocks of time to helping, many can step in for an hour or so while you run errands.

    Recognize the Time Has Come for Hospice Care

    There will come a day when all you can do is not enough. While you still want to do for your loved one, be objective and realize that he or she needs more than you can reasonably provide. At this juncture, you should speak with an organization that offers hospice care. Once you hear about the level of support and care they can provide, you will feel much better about the care your loved one will receive.

    Remember that the ultimate goal is for your loved one to be as comfortable as possible. Make use of all the support and resources on hand. Doing so will help ease your stress while also ensuring that the overall level of care remains high.
