It’s no secret that we live in a society where stress is at an all-time high. In fact, experts assert that chronic stress is the culprit behind many ailments and illnesses. I’m sure you can relate to the hustle and bustle of work and home life becoming overwhelming at times. This is why it is important to learn how you can contend with stress on a regular basis – so that you can live more relaxed, peaceful, and joyful.

Some people relieve stress by self-medicating with alcohol or thinking that a few drinks will bring them much pleasure. They think after a long, stressful day they are entitled to drinking to take the edge off. Of course, having a couple of drinks may not be a problem at all, but if you are drinking to cope with stress all the time, that is a sign of alcoholism. You think that the effects of alcohol will decrease your stress, but over time it really harms you physically and emotionally.

Just say no to dealing with stress that way! There are positive and fun ways you can deal with everyday stress. In fact, here are 9 ways you can contend with the stresses of life beginning today:

    1. Breathe deeply. A simple technique for reducing stress is deep breathing. You will physically feel your muscles relax as you do so. I’m sure you’ve heard that meditation does wonders for mind, body, and spirit. This is true. Meditation is simply focusing on the breath and quieting the mind. As a result, the body relaxes and stress melts away like hot butter. Take time daily to meditate or breathe deeply for less stress and more peace.

    2. Get the body moving. Another way to reduce stress is to get those endorphins going. As you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are hormones that cause you to feel pleasure. Take time to exercise regularly in order to release stress buildup. Go for a brisk walk, play tennis, hit the gym, or do any other sort of exercise that you enjoy four to five times a week for optimal health.

    3. Smile. Believe it or not, the simple act of smiling helps you feel better and relieve some stress. Try it. Smile big right now and notice how your thoughts and mood shifts for the better. Think about something funny; you could even have a hearty laugh if you want. Laughter is really one of the best medicines out there for stress, so laugh often and have some fun!

    4. Make a “Not-to-do” list. Do you know what will relieve some stress? Making a list of things that you must stop doing! Make a “not-to-do” list and list the things that you currently do that stress you out. Does staying up until midnight on a work night make you tired and stressed the next day? Put it on your list. Does talking with your mother-in-law stress you out? Put it on your list. Does saying yes to whoever asks you to do something stress you out? Put that on the list. Cut out what you can in your life that is not serving you well and you will be sure to reduce your stress that way.

    5. Plan a fun activity. Ever notice how an evening out can help you feel happy for days? Plan fun activities every so often so that you can relax and have fun with friends or family. Go bowling. Go roller-skating. Hit the movies. Plan a weekend away with your partner. If you tie up your life with just work and the routine day-to-day things, stress will build up and you won’t feel very good.

    6. Have a game night. Get those games out and have a fun game night with family or friends. You can go the old fashioned route and do board games or you can go high tech with the game systems like Playstation or Wii. Laughing and playing games is a great way to relieve stress and bond with friends and family.

    7. Watch funny videos. Ever laugh so hard you cried? Didn’t you feel so much better afterwards? If you want to relieve some stress in a fun way, watch funny movies, comedians, or get on YouTube and search funny videos.  Laughter is such an amazing stress buster!

    8. Plan romantic time. I’m sure you are well aware that spending intimate time with your partner relieves some stress. Be sure that you do so on a regular basis because sometimes life can get so busy and people neglect to do so. If you have children, send them off to Grandma’s for a while so you can enjoy an intimate evening. You can also plan a weekend get-away to delight in each other and let all your stresses float away!

    9. Engage in a hobby. If you’ve been thinking about starting up your hobby again or trying a new one, go for it! Taking time to do what you love is a great way to relieve stress. Take up painting, karate, woodworking, or whatever it is that sounds interesting to you. You’ll find that the time you invest in your hobby makes you feel less stressed and happier.

There are tons of stress-relieving activities for you to try right at your fingertips. Give these a try and watch your stress level decrease and your happiness level increase.
