3 Meditation Methods To Beat Depression

Woman Doing YogaDo you suspect you’re depressed but don’t know what to do about it? Maybe you’re too embarrassed to see a therapist, or perhaps you’ve been down that road before without making much progress in the way of feeling happier or more content with your life. I know the feeling!

In today’s society, many people are looking for that quick fix. Doctors are quick to prescribe “happy” pills, and lots of patients welcome them. But, it’s not for everyone. Whether you’re just determined to beat depression on your own or want a natural way to reverse your mood, meditation may just be the answer you’re looking for.

You might be thinking, “But I’ve tried meditation and didn’t feel any better.” That’s not uncommon. Meditation is an art that you practice and get better at over time. It’s not one of those quick fixes. The good news is that with some patience and a commitment to your wellbeing, you can beat depression with certain meditation methods, and there are no side effects to deal with, unless you count decreased anxiety and enhanced mood!

If you’re battling the blues and don’t know where to turn, try these meditation methods designed to give you that pick-me-up you need in the short-term while promoting long-term feelings of happiness and wellbeing:

    • Be mindful

Depression causes negative thoughts, and negative thoughts cause depression. It’s a vicious cycle. When you’re already feeling down, negative thoughts can be even more bothersome and thus, demand your attention. Unfortunately, the more attention you give them, the stronger their grip on you becomes. To stomp out negative thoughts and thus beat depression, try this mediation method: sit comfortably with your legs crossed. Close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. As thoughts enter your mind, just let them pass without attending to them. Notice how both positive and negative thoughts can enter and leave your mind. Though they may create different feelings, they are only thoughts, and you have the power to either let them go or bring them into your field of attention. Once you realize the control you have over your thoughts (and therefore, your feelings), you’ll feel empowered to beat depression once and for all!

    • Focus on the positive

Not all meditations have to consist of emptying your mind. Sometimes, it’s helpful to focus all of your mental powers on something—anything to keep your thoughts from wandering. You can focus on something that brings you joy in your life or just a general feeling like love or peace. Allow yourself to bask in the positive feelings that arise from your focused meditation.

    • Practice affirmations

Sometimes depression is the result of being overworked and underappreciated. Sound familiar? If so, try practicing meditation methods that include self-affirmations. After all, you don’t have to wait for someone else to give you the love and appreciation that you need to beat depression. As you meditate, repeat phrases like “I am needed,” “I bring joy to those around me,” “I am a source of love,” etc.
It’s not always easy to muster up the motivation to do anything when you’re feeling down. Believe me, I know!
